Q1.       Which are the Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) presently used in India ? 

Ans.

·   Chloroflourocarbons(CFCs)–12  for Refrigeration, Chillers and Metered Dose Inhalers.

·   Hydrochloroflourocarbons (HCFCs) - 22 for Air Conditioners .

·   Carbon Teterachloride (CTCs) for as solvent process agent mainly in the metal cleaning and textile industries. It is also used as feedstock in the manufacture of CFCs and DV Acid Chloride.

 

Q2.       Which ODS is no longer produced in India ?

 

Ans.     Halons, which were earlier used in fire  extinguishers. Halons continue to be used in Defence sector, which is exempt from Montreal Protocol. The production of CFCs has also been stopped from 01st August, 2008.

Q5.       Can products containing ODS be imported ?

 

Ans.     Import of any substances containing ODS is discouraged and can not be made unless he obtains a license issued by the authority.

 

Q6.      If a unit is having more than one activity such as manufacturing and trading or distribution, does it have to register separately for each activity ?

 

Ans.    Yes

 

Q7.      What is the penalty / punishment for the units not registered with MoEF as per ODS Rules ?

 

Ans.    Since ODS Rules is framed under the Environment Protection Act 1986, any violation of ODS rules will attract the penalties specified in the EP Act.
